Military tactics-based memoir an autobiography called, “Seven pillars of wisdom” written by Thomas Edward Lawrence during the period of the Arab revolt in 1917. It has gained much appreciation because of the author’s remarkable expressions. The book seems more in the style of a novel than an autobiography. 

The military tactics and maneuvers are so eloquently described and Lawrence seems quite critical regarding the imperialism during that era. The question of the origin of the title of the book is questioned. Some refer to the originating idea of Lawrence for the Seven Pillars of Wisdom as a title from the list of inspired acquaintances on the literary side.

Whereas, the clue of the title of Seven pillars of wisdom could be traced with Lawrence. And referring to seven holy and revered cities in the middle east. These cities included Cairo, Smyrna, Constantinople, Beirut, Aleppo, Damascus, and Medina. Some other writers took inspiration from Lawrence’s book title and named their books using similar words. For example, John Ruskin named his book Seven Lamps of Architecture. The book explains the author’s attached feelings and devotion to Bedouin. Likewise, the author is mesmerized by the learning experience received from the Arab Bedouins. 

Themed around the Quest for Freedom in Seven Pillars of Wisdom:

The book’s basic theme revolves around the Arab’s quest of getting freedom. And also the independence from the influence of the ottoman empire. The writer cherishes the moments of maneuvering the rebels against the influence of the Ottoman Empire. The empire had more influence in Damascus city in the middle east. The city is now the capital of Syria. The author in the seven pillars of wisdom beautifully expresses the reoccurring and echoing process of the revolt in the aftermath of history.

Even in the contemporary situation, the revolt of rebels in the middle east seems to be repeating history. The 2011 rebel revolt in Syria was vividly shown as the shadowing repetition of the revolt of 1917. Seven pillars of wisdom signify and relates to the enthusiasm expressed by the Bedouins upon being freed. Freedom and wisdom have a corresponding relation. With wisdom comes freedom, without it, no one yearns to gain freedom. ignorant people have never understood the importance of freedom. The revolt resulted in providing Arab Bedouin’s recognition in the world. Thus, the book seven pillars of Wisdom nurtures the value and zeal for freedom after reading it. 

Exposition of Author’s inner Feelings for Bedouins: 

Another prominent feature of the seven pillars of Wisdom is Lawrence’s innermost deep feelings for Arabs during his military role in the middle east. A poem for a Syrian boy, Selim Ahmad, was purely for Arabs. The words used in the poem shows his immense efforts to provide them freedom from the yoke of the Ottoman Empire. So, they recognize Lawrence’s immense empathy towards them. 

After reading the seven pillars of wisdom, one feels zealous toward freedom. Likewise, the book seven pillars of wisdom perturbs one’s soul while reading the scorching brutal events of the war.

Throughout the book, the author seems sympathetic toward Arab people. Seven pillars of wisdom show the author’s genuine loyalty towards the rebels during the revolt. The author finds great comfort in the landscape of the middle east region. He cherishes the maneuvering military tactics assisting them to gain independence. Eventually, he becomes a renowned military officer during the revolt. The incidents of the war show integrity and loyalty of Lawrence in the seven pillars of wisdom.

Lastly, seven pillars of wisdom is an interesting read for its expressive tone that reads like a novel. It is more interesting to read and one feels overwhelmed about the great significant experience of Lawrence in the middle east. Throughout the book, he seems quietly influenced by the living system of the Bedouins. More importantly, his military tactics turn out to be beneficial in defeating the Ottoman empire.

The book takes the reader’s interest to cherish and experience it in actuality. Other than this, the author in the seven pillars of wisdom indirectly referred to the biblical phrases relating to men’s freedom. The author manifests in the words. The rebels were mostly from the mentioned seven cities of the middle east. The author calls them, the ones who consider freedom worthy, are indeed astute ones. Besides this, Lawrence likes the poet, “Robert Groves”. The author’s book influenced the poet. 

In short, the author of seven pillars of wisdom seems quite attached to the landscape and the deserts of the middle east. His enthusiasm and zeal to assist Bedouins provide a sort of devotion and motivation to the readers. The author feels a great level of honor and love for Syrians.

Especially, when he expresses the words for the Syrian boy in the poem. The indirect reference given to freedom shows a higher level of eloquence in the writer’s expression. More importantly, the word Seven in the title also relates itself to the seven days of the week and seven wonders of the world. Thus, the title and content in the book are quite appealing and interesting. Ultimately, the author has the title, the Lawrence of Arabia. The book’s contents engross and inquire a reader to be awaiting to know more about the seven crucial pearls of wisdom curiously.
