It is not news that the movers and shakers of the planet are people with much power and influence. Our species has evolved, and people do not apply excessive force to get things done. Confrontations have caused more damage than necessary, as seen with several instances across the planet. The planet is starting to witness new leaders wielding large amounts of influence and power.
Absolute power, as they say, corrupts the mind. When a leader is in a position to realize the group’s collective targets and aims without being hostile with his subordinates, he commands respect from the group and is more efficient in getting results. Also, once we consider the tremendous forces at play within the world, the flutter of a butterfly’s wings don’t seem to possess much power. Yet, a Chinese proverb states that the might of a butterfly’s wings is often felt worldwide. Modern science reveals that this proverb could also be true. How we interpret our power and influence in the world changes the analogy of butterfly power. This rekindles our self-belief and the meaning of life.

Chaos theory came into being when a meteorologist was testing a straightforward model of weather prediction. He found that minor errors in his calculations quickly magnified via feedback loops to create an outsized difference within the results. He pondered his discovery, echoing the Chinese proverb, “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil depart a tornado in Texas?” The weather may be a nonlinear, chaotic system; there is a connection joining everything in the world. Butterfly power means every element within the system impacts the direction of every other’s element. Minor influences can have powerful effects.

We live in a sophisticated, interconnected, chaotic world. We are fragments of a large entity. Our words and acts have a ripple effect throughout this whole world. We exert a subtle influence just by the way we are. It requires fundamental modesty. We will never be sure what impact our effort is going to have on any situation. Our importance individually is usually underestimated. The entire world can be affected by one person or a small group of individuals. Chaos and the strength of butterflies is a perfect example of such an incredible achievement. Anything can happen at any time.

We find ourselves in a world hooked on power: cash, personality, and political influence all offer variations on power. We may feel that our future is determined by massive, ephemeral circles and social powers. Chaos proves to us that we are not helpless victims. We all possess the subtle influence of the butterfly. The tiny acorn contains all that’s necessary to become a mighty oak. Nature reminds us that we are all built and made to accomplish our life purposes.
We all know that a bit of influence can transform a whole system; the butterfly’s resilience serves as a constant reminder. The minor actions can have the most significant impact. When we consider our position in the world, we believe our power and influence to be minimal most of the time. The acorn, and ultimately the oak, empowers those who will allow themselves to be inspired. We must have the confidence to be who we are. We are powerful beings with a life purpose. Whatever way we use our talents, we create the world’s growth and harmony. We will make a difference if we so desire and work towards such achievement.
Ways to improve your power and influence as a leader.
The following are tips to help you grow your power and influence:
1. Have two-way conversations with people. Be direct. Could you treat them with respect? Seek their consent before reporting back on them. Convey to people what they have to listen to rather than what they need to listen to. Directness must be followed-up with ongoing, engaging, open, crucial conversations, or else communication might lead to a share waste of time and resources. This is wasted hot air that is soon forgotten.
2. Leaders gain credibility by celebrating and praising others in an inclusive, non-exploitative way. People with much influence and power will often allow friends and supposed enemies to criticize them. This allows them to consistently adapt their behaviors and their values to what comes out of these conversations.
3. An influential Super leader exerts their power proactively to promote the organization’s values.
4. The strength of power and influence is measured, considered, and strategies to advance the company’s vision and mission.

6. Power and influence don’t come from who you recognize. It comes from who knows, likes, respects, values, and trusts you. If you want people to be on the same side as you, you want to be able and willing to disclose your hopes, fears, goals, values, and insecurities. People generally like congruent people; that is, what you see is what you get. Respect comes from acting with integrity in the most challenging times.
Others will value you once they understand what you bring to the table, and which in turn reinforces their sense of competence and well-being. Trust is developmental, incremental, and fragile. At the beginning of a relationship, we tend to expose ourselves to an array of risks. Over time, after taking many risks and experiencing only a few disappointments, we come to trust. Trust is often broken – never to be regained – in a moment. Trust is as vital and as fragile as a spiders’ web.
Emotional intelligence can improve the faculty and influence of leaders.
A leader acts as the emotional guide for their followers. The influence of the leader on the followers is usually astounding. For instance, efficient leaders typically possess high levels of persuasion. However, it’s not the extent of persuasion that’s always evident. When people’s emotions are infused with enthusiasm, their performance will soar.
On the other hand, if they’re exposed to anxiety and resentment, their persuasiveness and influence dwindle. The mechanisms behind this phenomenon are not far-fetched. Much of this process affects the human brain and can even change its settings permanently.
Our emotional centers operate in an open-loop system. This means happenings outside the body manage our brain. This permits us to come to the emotional rescue of people. It’s the mechanism that permits us to be empathetic. A simple example may be a mother soothing an upset child. Research in medical care units has revealed that the comforting presence will help to calm the patient. This open-loop design of our visceral brain means people can change their emotions. Understanding this in leadership is significant.
For instance, if the leader is frustrated, the followers may pick up this despite the leader’s plan to disguise it. Open communication is the only antidote to the present problem. It requires frank discussion between the leader and his subordinates, laced with a touch of humor, to create mutual understanding. Emotions, according to researchers, are contagious and spread whenever people are near one another. This takes place non-verbally. The more cohesive the group, the more it’s possible to “catch” emotional feelings from others within the group.
In the workplace, a leader stays at the fore by setting the emotional standards for the group day by day. Not all emotions spread at an equivalent rate or with an equivalent effect. At one end of the spectrum, cheerfulness, warmth, and humor are very contagious. On the other end, irritability, depression, and gloom don’t spread at an equivalent rate. Laughter is highly contagious because once someone laughs with us, we automatically smile, which spreads a sequence reaction throughout the group. Laughter is powerful because it establishes a lock between all the brain stem systems immediately.
This suggests that it’s the most natural form of communication possible between two people. Laughter sends a strong message that we are on an equivalent wavelength. We trust and find luxury in one another. It invariably depicts that the happiness of a group or team is a direct factor of its head or leader. This has been demonstrated repeatedly in the relationship between coaches and their sports teams.
Effective and efficient leaders within the emerging world must learn and practice total power and influence upon followers and subordinates. This will be achieved by studying and understanding the characters of the people around you. The way you relate to individuals will go a long way to persuading subordinates that you are someone to be respected and obeyed. Be loved as a leader – the world has no time for forceful achievers (i.e., leaders who force their thanks to achieving their aims and targets).
