In her roles as advisor, supervisor, (interim) director or sustainability manager, she works in a result-oriented way by mapping the environment, identifying the stakeholders and determining common goals. She looks for workable solutions, whereby she brings about sustainable change by always including people and the culture in improvement processes. In teams she prefers to be the cooperative foreman and she assumes equality.
Leadership without commitment is like a car without fuel. A leader’s general motive is to lead, inspire and motivate people to achieve a common goal. This cannot be achieved without the leader showing some sense of commitment. First of all, we need to know what commitment is.
What is a commitment? Commitment is the state of being dedicated to a cause or activity. Commitment is setting your heart to fulfill a purpose. It is also an agreement or pledge or promise to do something. When one is said to be committed, it means there is a rule or obligation that binds you to a cause of action. You can tell a committed person is someone who has dedicated his life and ambition to something.
Before anyone commits, there are certain conditions the person would have agreed to and rules to live by. As a leader who others derive inspiration from, a lack of commitment to the general-purpose will reduce the motivation among the workers. This could show a carefree attitude to work and not abiding by the team’s rules and regulations. Commitment to a leader is as important as the purpose of leading.
The commitment that enhances Leadership will entail devotion of time and resources. Commitment is not what must be said for people to know but what must be put into action. One of the catalysts that drive a team’s success is a commitment to the leader. Commitment from the leaders means no excuse for the followers not to be committed.

When a leader is appointed, or a leader is moved into a higher level of power, one of the things that will aid success is commitment. Commitment is devoting your time, purpose, and resources to the eventual success of a cause. Leaders are not expected to behave like other people following them; if others feel that the team’s goal cannot be achieved, it is not the leader’s duty to be the one to back down and discourage others.
A committed leader must show persistence and resilience. The followers are watching the leaders and hope to learn from the leaders. A committed leader will not leave the followers to sort out solutions to problems and challenges. A committed leader devotes himself to the cause and is on the front line in finding solutions to any challenging issue. A leader that shies away from challenges and pushes the followers to a problematic situation is not committed.
Ingredients of Leadership commitment
Under this topic, we will be treating the requirements for the commitment that enhances Leadership. As we have learned earlier, Leadership without obligation is non-functional. Loyalty is like fuel that powers a car. A leader would face challenges, the need for change and adaptability, the test of ability, etc., this requires leadership commitment. We have three requirements and conditions responsible for enhancing Leadership: Courage, Communication, and Concentration.
- Courage: A leader who is not courageous cannot go far. Courage aids strength and pushes a man into complex problems. Others will leave behind a leader who fears taking the risk. In a quest to make changes and devise new means of achieving success, a leader needs to make some risky decisions that can only be facilitated by courage. A leader who is not courageous will be a discourager; he will not see into the promising future ahead; he will only see challenges they cannot overcome.
A team without a courageous leader will remain stagnant and be left behind by others. To be committed, you need to be bold as a leader. Maintaining standards and achieving full potential becomes complicated when a discourager leads a team. For existing and incoming leaders, courage is vital to their success. An incoming leader who is meant to impact an instant change will only achieve it by being courageous.
- Communication: Another constituent of commitment is communication. Effective communication is essential to show promise. A practical and repeated contact is needed to reinforce commitment and maintain momentum. During work or projects, distraction might set in, and followers might lose focus. What will keep them aligned and focused on the shared general is communication.
- Communication breeds a healthy relationship between the leaders and the followers. Transmission, in most cases, overrides room for strive and grudges among staff and leaders. The leaders can often communicate and remind the team what the goals are and what standard they must maintain. It gives no room for distraction and loss of focus. It welcomes ideas and suggestions, which gives room for development. A leader shows commitment by displaying good communicating skills, which help him maintain a solid and active relationship with the members.
- Concentration: An absent-minded leader frustrates the followers. It shows that the leader is not committed when he or she lacks concentration. Engagement requires that a leader maintains absolute focus on the team and their goal. They are giving attention to details, finding out the best way to make the teamwork better, finding out about their needs without them knowing, and showing that you as a leader are concerned and committed. When a leader is not saved, he cannot concentrate on the cause he has been appointed to lead: concentration aids focus and commitment.
Why do leaders need to show commitment?
Commitment is a vital part of a leader’s success. A leader will not function well without being committed to the cause or the group he has been appointed to lead. Why then is commitment important for a leader’s success?
- Cooperation: When a leader shows commitment, it aids collaboration among him and the staff. A higher level of commitment will build intimacy and foster trust. If there is no cooperation, there cannot be trust. Trust is built when everyone appears to be committed to the same motive and goal.
- Efficiency: When a leader is committed, it helps to build commitment among working staff. The more committed people become, the more effective they will be. Commitment makes efficient at work. A committed leader keeps the working environment conducive for working activities.
- Encouragement: When a leader shows commitment to the team and their goals, the team is not easily discouraged. A leader can only give what he has, and if he is not committed, he cannot encourage the team. It is effortless for a committed leader to encourage the followers. The leader sets an example, and others follow in the same line. Even when results are not coming forth, the leader is still committed and thereby encouraging the followers.
- Improvement: Commitment brings about progress both by the leader and the followers. When a person is committed to achieving a goal, he tends to learn and improve on himself and how he would be able to attain the goal. On the road to success, mistakes are allowed. Commitment helps us understand what we need to know to achieve our goals and encourages us to make mistakes.
Building for the Future: How do you build for the future when you are not committed to the company’s goal. Commitment helps to build for the future. That is the reason why companies count it as a significant loss whenever they lose one of their long-serving members either to other companies or starting their own company. Commitment aids longevity. It is effortless to build in along the line when you have committed members who know the values you stand for.
How to improve commitment
- Build a trustworthy team: Teamwork is very vital to the success of a team. For any organization that will make an impact and is successful, the team is critical. When the team works together towards achieving a goal, the challenges on their way become very easy to overcome. Teamwork promotes commitment. A leader must ensure that there is communication among the team members and build trust among them.
- Be transparent: Transparency in an organization aids commitment. The workers know that nothing is hidden from them, and the general goals and objectives are repeated. This includes them allowed to participate in discussions related to the company, giving them an important task to achieve. Transparency aids commitment; making your plans public will help you and others stay committed to your goal.
- Impact lives: A leader’s role in the life of their followers is crucial. Leaders are meant to impact, inspire and lead others on the right path. When you encourage others, you lift them, thereby improving commitment.
- Be ready for Change: Life is not a bed of roses; there will come success and challenges. Part of the challenges may include you adapting to new changes around you. Change is constant; it will come. What matters is how the change is handled.
- Be trustworthy: Trust is essential in organizations and business settings. When you are reliable and trust people, you build commitment. Trust helps in creating an exceptional relationship between people in their work or personal life.
