We all are in one way or another other familiar with the word attitude, and so is attitudinal competence. Attitude can be defined as a way of feeling or acting towards a person, thing, or situation. The dictionary puts it as a settled way of thinking or feeling about something. In some places, it is referred to as a manner, disposition, feeling, and position with regard to a person or thing. In simple terms, your attitude is the way you feel towards a thing. While our attitudes to things may differ, we can also have people with similar attitudes. You might have been referred to as an odd person, because of your attitude to things which is different from people’s attitudes and way of perception in that particular area, but you can still find yourself acceptable when you get to some areas. As a member of an organization or as a worker or as a leader at any level, you get to meet different people with different attitudes, what gives one an edge is attitudinal competence.

               What then is “Attitudinal competence”? Attitudinal competence is your ability to adapt and adapt your best attitude to deal with situations and happenings which has happened, currently happening, or have future occurrence and not be stuck with our normal natural habitual attitudes. Competence is the state of being competent; this is the state of having sufficient knowledge, judgment, skill, or strength. To be competent means that one is capable of applying issues related to knowledge and skills to make some problem-solving decisions. A lawyer is not said to be competent if he continues to lose cases he should have won in court, the same thing applies to all other professions. To be competent doesn’t come easy or naturally, it is a product of training, skills, experience, and knowledge with one’s ability to apply them successfully when it matters. The ability to adapt to situations ignoring what your natural attitudes are is attitudinal competence. As a leader or an ordinary worker in an organization, what can help you tolerate people even in their worst moments is attitudinal competence.

               Attitudinal competence is being able to switch in-between situations and having control over them. We all have different attitudes and these attitudes are put to test often. We all know what our attitudes are and from there we know what our strengths and weaknesses which have a great impact on our outcomes. How does a leader cope with his workers without attitudinal competence? The way most people see leaders is different from the way leaders see themselves; although it is not easy to be a leader only a few people know that. They throw at you what they cannot tolerate on a normal day, but they expect their leaders to be superhuman can handle it. Some might even think among themselves, why is he a leader if he can’t tolerate that? Attitudinal competence will help any individual go a long way especially when dealing with people.

Attitudinal Competence And Attitudinal Fix

               Over the years I have come across these two words; “attitudinal fix” and “attitudinal competence”. Attitudinal fix according to Wikipedia refers to solving a problem or resolving a conflict by bringing about an attitude change. An attitudinal fix is one of the few emotional conflict resolution mechanisms that deals with issues that are related to feelings, emotions, and values associated with attitude. This might be a fix that is directed at changing a specific situation or resolving a matter, but attitudinal competence is being able to handle all situations, adapting and blending along with the demands of the situation as the case may be. For instance, an example of an attitudinal fix can be seen when a person is compelled to fix a bad attitude of his that people do not like and this might be focused on one side of the attitude ignoring the other part that may need fixing.

               Attitudinal competence unlike attitudinal fix is multidimensional, which means having the ability to handle all issues as they arise with the best attitude. An attitudinal fix might be directed at one particular attitude that is bad just to solve issues, but attitudinal competence is working towards being a better person across all behavior and attitude. Attitudinal competence is knowing what to do about an issue and acting accordingly; it also means putting behind natural sentiments to make the best decision. There are moments when our feelings as humans will want to push us into doing some things, saying some words, or making some decisions, attitudinal competence helps us to take control of the situation at hand, making the best choices and not the situation dictating our decisions. It can also be said to be maturity in terms of behavior and attitude display. Attitudinal competence is a combination of skills, knowledge, and the right attitude for the successful handling of situations.

               At every level in life, competence is needed in all of our endeavors. Competence is showing diligence and capacity handling. Even before you would be given a job as an employee, you must show that you are competent. We are all aware of the reason why one must be competent at work, but competency in matters that pertain to life and its application is more important. We shall look into some of the advantages of attitudinal competence.


When learned and put into action, attitudinal competence is an effective way of living right. As earlier said, attitudinal competence puts you in the control sit of every situation and not the situation dictating the tone of the moment. Bad attitude has led to the downfall of many and it is still in action, the ability to be able to remain unpredicted in the world that we are in today gives you an edge. Applying your knowledge and experience to getting the best out of a situation will yield 100% positive results. Attitudinal competence is tailored towards success and fulfillment.

Day by day, we are faced with challenges that need to be handled with care, we have faced questions that need answers and also opportunities to attain our goals. With the right attitude at specific moments, one can rest assured of fewer mistakes that may paint one as a bad person. It is irrelevant in most cases to start to explain yourself and your actions for people to understand; what about people who saw you and you don’t have the opportunity to meet them again to correct your actions? Attitudinal competence gives us the readiness to handle any situation and not act in a wrong way before realizing what we have done. It helps us to suppress our sentiments to do the right thing.

Happy life

Attitudinal competence enhances a happy life; you keep fewer grudges and you can handle situations as they come. When you are competent in attitude, it will not go unnoticed because people are around and they weigh your attitude as you display them. You become loved and even people are ready to fight for you in cases when you are cheated. You become a role model for people, it reduces friction in marriages and homes between the husband and wife or between the children and their parents. It also brings out stability psychologically, and less stress, and worries.


You become more productive when you are not bothered or surprised by happenings around you because you are ready for such a situation. Attitudinal competence increases your productivity and relationship with men. It is normal for one to do to people what they have done but attitudinal competence teaches them to act accordingly. Talk when you ought to and remain silent depending on the situation at hand. There are a lot of people engaging them in words that would bring you down to their level, in those cases silence makes you a winner and you are even proud of yourself.

Strong will

Many people want to be a better person but have been engrossed and taken over by their bad attitude. Attitudinal competence gives you a strong will that no matter what the case may be, you won’t react badly. Some people are very easy to annoy and when they are angry, it is full-blown anger that is hard to contain, when you are competent attitudinally, you are calm in every situation. The will to become a better person is further strengthened.

Things To Work On With Regards To Attitudinal Competence

Critical Thinking

Critical thinkers don’t rush into making decisions, they think deeply before action. This aids their decision-making. To achieve attitudinal competence, you must be a critical thinker and not just a surface thinker.

Decision Making

Aside from critical thinking, you must be diligent in your decisions. Some decisions cannot be reversed and they say the first impression lasts long. Part of attitudinal competence is making good decisions at every point in time.


You must be flexible to be competent attitudinally. Rigid people do not welcome change and adaptation, they do things the old way and the natural way they know. Things don’t work that way; you must be flexible both in your thinking and application.


You must be committed to the course of being a better person, if you haven’t made that decision, it will be easy to be swayed around when the decision time comes.
